Pete Lockett - Percussion Toolbox (The beguiling Udu Drum #1) - Issue 301
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.2 года назад
This instrument has become the cornerstone of a lot of percussionists’ set-ups. Originating from Nigeria and not to be confused with the South Indian Ghatam, this amazing drum is now widely available from leading percussion manufacturers such as LP. The origins of the drum have been traced back to central and southern Nigeria, and it is known by many different names depending on the tribal area...
Erik Stams - Creative Concepts - Stepped Hi-hat Ostinato Exercises - Issue 301
Просмотров 6222 года назад
In this issue we will be focusing on playing stepped 8th notes and off-beat 8th notes on the hi-hat to add more momentum, syncopation and colour to our grooves. Stepped hi-hat notes are produced by literally stepping on the hi-hat pedal. This involves the use of four-way coordination between your hands and feet. It is important to get your posture and balance right to make this feel good and to...
Rhythm - 'Drumlines' by Sergeant First Class Nakama Ayami of the JGSDF
Просмотров 5392 года назад
For the Drumlines feature in Rhythm (Issue 301) Stu Warmington spoke to Sergeant First Class Nakama Ayami of the JGSDF. Here is a COFFEE BREAK CHALLENGE - FUJI-SAN. The Japan Ground Self-Defence Force Central Band (JGSDF) was established in 1951 under the auspices of the National Police Reserve, forerunner of the JGSDF, and has been performing ever since. Throughout the last 70 years it has rem...
Pete Riley - Technical Difficulties - Stepped Hi-hat Shuffles - Issue 301
Просмотров 5992 года назад
Here we continue this issue’s theme of stepped hi-hat ideas but in a swing or shuffle context. The basic patterns entail splitting the shuffle rhythm between the right hand and left foot, so the left foot plays the swung upbeat, or ‘skip note’ (Ex 1). This is an approach you may have seen used by Steve Gadd and usually featuring four-on-the-floor on the bass drum. So as well as being able to sp...
Pete Riley - Rudiment Of The Month - Drag paradiddle #1 - Issue 301
Просмотров 5792 года назад
The drag paradiddle is a particularly technically challenging rudiment as it features double strokes played at two different rates. The slower rate is the regular diddle at the end of the figure and the faster rate is the drag played after the accent. The basic figure with its regular notation is shown in Ex 1...(continues in magazine) If you like these videos please do consider subscribing to ...
Jason Bowld - Four-Piece-Fills - Dense Sticking Combos - Issue 301
Просмотров 4172 года назад
In the last issue of Rhythm, we looked at some combined linear/rudimentary fills. You could almost think of them as rudiments shared between the hands and feet, which takes a lot of coordination and dynamic ‘Yin-Yang’ to sound convincing. But anything that sounds good and progresses your technique is worth the time, right? So I really hope you enjoy the challenge of this month’s follow-up, play...
Colin Woolway - Getting Started - Stepped Hi-hat Notes - Issue 301
Просмотров 8512 года назад
Welcome to the wacky world of stepped hi-hat notes. Colin muses that the hi-hat is the most underrated element of the drum set, and the art of playing it with the foot is largely ignored by a lot of drummers. But hopefully this lesson will help you get started on working that hi-hat pedal. First, a quick word about technique; you can play the hi-hat pedal with your foot flat or with your heel s...

Erik Stams - Creative Concepts - Grooves using Linear Fragments - Issue 300
Просмотров 5623 года назад
Linear phrasing involves the articulation and orchestration of each note of a rhythm, groove or fill with a different limb or on a separate voice of the drum kit. This is in contrast with the ‘layered’ approach we normally take when playing beats, where the bass drum/hi-hat or snare drum/hihat fall in unison. A useful analogy would be to compare a linear phrase to an arpeggio, which is played o...
Pete Riley - Technical Difficulties - Drumming with 4-over-3 linear grooves - Issue 300
Просмотров 9333 года назад
Linear drumming, with its idea of avoiding two sounds falling simultaneously, means the bass drum or stepped hi-hats can be combined with the hands to create an interesting alternative to single strokes or time playing where the right hand plays a steady rhythm. It’s probably worth not being overly concerned about two limbs potentially falling together, as in fact it’s the combination of the tw...
Pete Lockett - Percussion Toolbox (the wonderful world of bongos part 2) - Issue 300
Просмотров 3653 года назад
In the last issue, we looked at the open treble tone on the smaller bongo and the lower tone stroke on the lower bongo. This time we will do a whistle stop tour of a few other tones and muting techniques, starting out with the ‘slap’ stroke. The slap stroke is the sharp cutting sound we also find in conga and djembe technique. To explain it simply, you cup the hand and ‘grab’. After you have st...
Colin Woolway - Getting Started - Linear with grooves in 3 and 5 - Issue 300
Просмотров 7713 года назад
This issue we are looking at the ‘linear’ style of playing - where no notes come together - applied to grooves and also to fills. If you haven’t tried this yet, I guarantee this lesson will be a great starting point. We’ll ‘get started’ with simple groupings of 3 and 5, each subdivision punctuated with a bass drum note... To read the rest of the details of this lesson with examples, check out I...
Pete Riley - Rudiment Of The Month - Double Paradiddle - Issue 300
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 года назад
A double paradiddle is the longer six-note variant of the single paradiddle. Sometimes referred to as a paraparadiddle, it’s the single-stroke element of the paradiddle, which has been doubled to give us R L R L R R, L R L R L L. Occasionally, the double paradiddle is confused with its other relative, the paradiddlediddle (R L R R L L) - but as well as being a different sticking, the stand-out ...

Getting used to playing in a linear style fluently takes time, as does utilising rudiments in fills.Once you’ve mastered these skills, the task of creating something original and musical presents another challenge, so in this lesson, we’re going to combat this by combining concepts! The following three examples all feature various rudimentary sticking patterns combined with linear phrases that ...

I grew up with this being my favorite band, and the best part was I knew I could take my 8 year old son and the music would still be great for him as well. We went to Red Rocks twice and he still talks about the shows (he is 21 now)!! Also was able to take my best friend who has now passed and sit front row just off of center at Red Rocks. Thanks to Neil (RIP), Geddy, Alex and all of the extremely talented folks who put on these amazing shows! You will never be forgotten!

I've become a much better drummer by listening to this man play drums for years. I'm a leftie but play a right handed kit. Some people don't understand how much listening skills are needed to become a skilled player. I'm not talking about listening to yourself.
